A practical tool stack for running SaaS with a small IT team
Edge protection, observability, errors, paging, private access, credentials and backups, with the advice to buy less.
A SitePoint community article by contributor Vasyl Popovych walks through tools a small SaaS team can use to keep production healthy: Cloudflare at the edge, Grafana Cloud for metrics, logs and traces, Sentry for application errors, Better Stack for uptime and on-call, Tailscale for private access, 1Password for shared credentials, and restic for backups. Despite the headline's seven, an eighth, NAKIVO Backup & Replication, is added for whole-workload recovery.
The author says the list is based on documentation, not hands-on testing, and stresses buying less: check what your host already covers, and start from four questions. Can you detect a failed user workflow? Can a developer trace the cause? Can someone regain access if the main admin is away? Can you restore data within the time the business can tolerate?
Every tool also needs a named owner, and the article suggests rehearsing one failure at a time, such as a test alert or a restore into a clean environment.
